How to prepare a tractor for installing agricultural navigation

Does installing navigation require special preparations?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions by farmers who are starting their journey with a GPS system. Many users worry about a complicated installation, the need to modify the electrical system, or interfering with the steering system.

In this post, we'll show you that PWL NanoSteer navigation systems are designed for quick and hassle-free installation. In most cases, it takes about 2-3 hours and does not require permanent changes to the tractor.

Check the tractor model

The first and most important step is to determine what tractor you have. Based on that, the steering wheel mounting sleeve and wiring harness are chosen. This way, the system allows a wide range of installation options on most tractors. It doesn't matter whether you have a new or old tractor, we'll solve your problem ;)

Make sure the electrical system is working properly

Before installation, it's worth checking:

• battery voltage,
• condition of fuses,
• proper operation of the power socket,
• overall condition of the tractor's wiring.

This way, we won't run into any problems related to installing the navigation system.

Take care of the place where the GNSS receiver will be installed

It is usually mounted on the tractor's roof. To achieve maximum driving accuracy:

• the surface should be clean,  
• the receiver should have an unobstructed view of the sky,  
• avoid mounting it near other antennas that could interfere with the signal.

This is one of the key elements affecting straight passes and driving accuracy.

Plan a spot for the tablet

The tablet should be placed in a spot that:

• doesn’t block visibility,  
• is easily accessible for the operator,  
• allows comfortable work while driving.

It’s most often mounted on the cabin pillar or on the right side using the included holder.

Check the condition of the steering system

Before installation, it's worth checking whether the steering wheel in your tractor has excessive play. This doesn't mean that installing the navigation system is impossible.

The automatic guidance system can compensate for minor deviations, but heavily worn components may affect driving accuracy. Regular maintenance and inspections will help keep the steering wheel in good condition.
